On the Cover: Myocardial infarction is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
Current regenerative medicine approaches face a number of shortcomings, limiting their
applicability in the clinic. Advances in biomaterials and stem cell bioengineering
could lead to new therapeutic approaches to recover cardiac function. In this issue,
Mei et al. (pp. 1253–1268) develop an origami-inspired heart pouch for repeated administration
of therapeutics which can be implanted into the pericardial cavity through minimally
invasive surgery. The authors demonstrate its safety and therapeutic potential to
deliver paracrine factors from mesenchymal stem cell after myocardial infarction in
